THE CAYMAN INTERSERIES – News and Notes, July 23, 2010
Mid-Season Celebration at Autobahn Country Club Features a Full Schedule of On and Off-Track
Excitement; Championships Heating Up; Andy Wallace Comments on Cayman Interseries Run
JOLIET, Ill. (July 23, 2010) – The Cayman Interseries will mark the mid-season point of its first full
year of competition at the HARRAH’S Autobahn Grand Prix presented by Mazda, July 30 - August 1,
where a full schedule of on and off-track excitement at Autobahn Country Club promises one of the
most enjoyable event weekends of the year.
Located in Joliet less than an hour from Westmont, Illinois, Autobahn is the home-track for the
Cayman Interseries, and its parent organization Napleton Porsche of Westmont, and the premier
Porsche dealer is pulling out the stops as the perfect host for the weekend. Napleton Porsche is
covering the entry fees for all Cayman Interseries competitors, complimentary catering will be
provided throughout the weekend in the designated Cayman Interseries paddock and numerous
parties are scheduled when the on-track action ends each day.
Drivers already entered for the Autobahn event include 2010 race winners Jim Bacus, David
Heinemeier Hansson and Lee Davis, returning veterans Will Conniff, Tony Sitko and Skip Cloar
and debuting 19-year-old Leigh Martino, who will be the first woman and youngest driver ever to
start a Cayman Interseries race.
Cloar will make his first start of the season in his No. 25 Cayman S that carries the livery of the Mobil
1 Porsche 911 GT1 that won overall at Le Mans in 1998. Martino will also carry the colors of a Le
Mans winner in her debut and drives the No. 7 Cayman S that is themed after the memorable yellow,
black and white New Man/Joest Racing Porsche 956 that won the 24 Hour classic on the Circuit de la
Sarthe in 1984. Martino has spec Miata series race experience at Autobahn and plenty of additional
laps on the track behind the wheel of a BMW M3 and her family’s recently acquired Cayman
Interseries car.
A Thursday promoter test day, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., is also available for competitors to enter at their
own cost prior to three full days of on-track action courtesy of the Cayman Interseries on Friday,
Saturday and Sunday. Testing prior to the event weekend may also be scheduled through the
Cayman Interseries.
CHAMPIONSHIP CHASE
Although the Autobahn race is a non-points event, the 2010 Cayman Interseries championship battles
should be a hot topic of conversation. Champions will be crowned in both the sprint and endurance
racing formats this season and the same trio currently ranks in the top three in both title battles, but
two different drivers lead the respective championships.
Bacus leads the sprint championship with 168 points after scoring his first race win of the season at
last month’s Savannah Historic Races. Bacus drove his popular purple and green No. 3 Cayman S,
themed after the famous Martini “Hippy” Porsche 917LH, to victory in the opening sprint of the
weekend. Bacus also won his first pole of the season in Savannah and backed up his win with a
second-place run in the weekend’s other sprint race. Other runner-up showings came in the sprints
at the season-opening event in Sebring this past March in addition to a third at Road America in May.
With a maximum 25 points available to a driver in any sprint race, Bacus has built a comfortable 48-
point lead over nearest challenger Davis, who drives the No. 333 Luna C Clothing Cayman S that
carries the red and black colors of the Advan Porsche 962s. Davis made his Cayman Interseries
debut at Road Atlanta in April and quickly factored into the points race despite missing the Sebring
opener. He finished third in both Road Atlanta sprints and in the opening race at Savannah, in
addition to taking a pair of fourths in the Road America short races. Although Davis spun in
Savannah’s final sprint, which allowed Bacus to build a cushion in the standings, the Atlanta-based
driver still has 120 points and what it takes to mount a challenge in the final half of the season.
New York’s Jim McCormick swept both sprints in the Sebring opener in a weekend of total
domination in his No. 44 Cayman S that is modeled after the Martini & Rossi “Baby” Porsche 935.
Although he has missed a few sprint starts while focusing on the endurance title, McCormick backed
up his Sebring wins with a second-place run in Road America’s opening sprint race. McCormick’s
108 sprint points rank him third in the sprint standings, but he is also the current overall leader in the
endurance title chase with 93 points. In addition to winning the enduro at Sebring, McCormick
finished second in the long race at Road Atlanta.
Davis is also second in the endurance championship standings after scoring his first Cayman
Interseries victory with co-driver Ryan Eversley in the Savannah enduro. He also finished fourth in
his Road Atlanta debut and joined Eversley for a second-place finish in the long race at Road
America. With a maximum 30 points available to a driver in any endurance race, Davis is right on
McCormick’s heels with 82 points. Bacus also factors into the endurance title mix with 80 points, and
his fourth-place finishes, driving with Jack Baldwin, in the last two enduros at Sebring and Road
America have been his top long-race showings of the season.
DOUBLE DAVID
Hansson is the only driver currently entered at Autobahn that has won multiple races this year. He
drove his No. 1 Cayman S, which is themed after the famous Rothmans Porsche 956 and 962 race
cars, to victory in the enduro at Road Atlanta in April in addition to capturing the final sprint of the
weekend in Savannah, the last time the Cayman Interseries raced.
WILL COME BACK
Conniff is making just his third race weekend start of the season after participating in the Sebring
opener and the Road America event in May. His best result to date in his No. 2 Cayman, which runs
the yellow and red livery of the famous Martini “Psycho” Porsche 917, was second in the Sebring
enduro with co-driver Kevin Roush.
WORDS FROM WALLACE
Le Mans and Rolex 24 At Daytona-winning sports car racing legend Andy Wallace took his first laps
in a Cayman Interseries car during May’s event at Road America and recently found a few minutes
free in his busy schedule to talk about the experience. Wallace drove Sitko’s red No. 70 Cayman S
that sports the livery of the Hawaiian Tropic/Dick Barbour Racing Porsche 935.
“Firstly, I want to say a big thank you to Tony Sitko for allowing me to drive his Cayman Interseries
car,” Wallace said. “I was at Road America to race for Jim Rogers in his immaculate Audi R8 with
Bill Adam, and by chance bumped into Tony in the paddock. During the last few HSR events I
couldn’t help but notice the gleaming collection of Porsche Caymans in their splendid retro livery.
What a great idea. I can remember those famous racing Porsches as a kid and it’s fantastic to see
them in action again. Everyone involved in the series always seem to be smiling and enjoying their
racing and after my few laps in the car I can see why. The Cayman is easy to drive with great
handling. It’s a well balanced car with reasonable power and, in true Porsche tradition, it feels like it
was built to race. I had a great time behind the wheel, lap by lap discovering the limits of the car. At
the same time I was in the middle of a swarm of equally prepared Caymans all slipstreaming and
passing and re-passing each other. It was a steep adjustment after climbing out of the Audi Le Mans
car, but a very enjoyable ride. The checkered flag came too soon after five or so laps, but I enjoyed
every minute. I’m lucky enough to have a busy racing schedule this year in both Europe and the U.S.,
but I’m sure I could fit in a Cayman Interseries race should the opportunity arise.”
